Connectivity and Telecommunications remain at the forefront of any country’s development, and particularly for the ICT sector if it were to be viewed from the lens of inclusive development. While mobile platforms are available aplenty, focus on consumerism without adequate emphasis on increasing productive capacities of citizens’ results in spectacular failures as evidenced in many parts of the world. How should African nations come together to develop collaborative models where technical infrastructure is viewed as a shared model, and growth is pursued collectively across chosen economic sectors?

12:30 - 13:30 Plenary Panel 4 – Developing a Sustainable Services Sector by Leveraging ICT “The Maturity and Experience of the Mauritian ICT Industry and its Capability to Export its Services in the Region”
While ICT has been increasingly seen as a sector that could transform economies, the pursuit of ICT development created a more than larger emphasis on consumerism and discrete provisioning of services. Demand dynamics and the attendant fluidity have resulted in lacklustre growth from discrete provisioning. What should Mauritius and African private sectors do to ensure that supply centricity doesn’t become so ingrained that demand – both local and regional – becomes an after-thought? How should companies leverage management models where success is measured in business and socio-economic outcomes, instead of just the pace of technology adoption? What services does Africa need the most that the private sector should endeavor at creating and delivering?
